This evokes the scriptural image; Ardhanarishwar in which one half is Nar (Purush/Man) and other half is Nari (Prakriti/Woman). Two opposites make one complete; a sort of Yin and Yang.
If I were strictly to go by this interpretation than the other half of this picture ought to be a Happy Purush (Happy Man); and I do not like my imagination running amok.
The picture exudes a Bengali woman’s sadness; a Jamindar’s extraneous wife from Sahib, Bibi aur Ghulam.
